Steelmaking Coal

Our 50-50 joint venture, the BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA), is the largest exporter of steelmaking coal in the world.

Established in 2001, BMA operates seven metallurgical coal mines in Queensland’s Bowen Basin and owns and operates the Hay Point Coal Terminal near Mackay.

Other than the underground longwall at Broadmeadow mine, BMA’s mines are open-cut and use draglines and truck and shovel fleets for overburden removal.

Today, BMA is the largest Japan-Australia joint venture in Queensland with more than 10,000 full-time equivalent employees and contractors.

As well as sustaining jobs, our mines also play an important role in growing vibrant communities. In the 2022 financial year Mitsubishi Development contributed more than A$8 billion to regional, state and national economies in Australia, including through our BMA Partnership.
